in their diameter on one side, it's not very noticeable but if you give it a good feel, it'll be revealed. I did it so that you can run a front brake (most hinge clamp ones) and flip flop it to whichever side you want that brake on. good news: it's wicked, bad news: It doesn't really run a bell that well.

so I more or less took the summer off from working for two reasons. 1) my first born son was born - amazing. 2) I decided to re-engineer the bars entirely and make a lot of templates and demo bars.

I met chris at the LCBO the other day and took a look at his Maple bars he's been running with for a few months. they look so nice now, like antique furniture almost in that well worked oil finish + daily hand polishing sweat way- like an old axe or hatchet or somethin.

back to point, the "new" bars (v2) are no longer made from sweet grained hardwoods but rather from sweet high-grade aircraft ply. on average each bar is rocking 21 layers of ply at 1/16". what does that mean? damn strong son, is what that means.

wow! Busy summer. We had a baby, and this little guy has been keeping us busy! To those of you waiting on bars - THANK YOU for your patience - the wait will be well worth it I promise!

I decided to re-engineer the bars entirely from the inside out and they are the greatest things you have NOT YET SEEN! I am so confident in these bar's wickedness and style. so fine. Those of you in SD and INDY will be getting yours soon. look out!

new tools, new timber

I setup my new table router this week, ran a few test strips, honed the bit a little, and ran some bars from a nice new piece of Sugar Maple. This one is about 40-50 years old, has that "maple ribbon" and has such a light complexion that I might stain a few to add some character and see how that looks.

Here's one rough cut, pre-finished.

This one is the fucking best. Look at that grain. It's so tight. look at it on the left (AB) and then how it gets so rich on over to the right. It's a stiff bar, oh that's for sure. What I like about it is that the grain is so tight on the left. kind of making it asymetrical. I get a kick out of asymetrical.

I came up on a speed skater on the Lakeshore trail today afterwork. As I passed, I saw him pickup and settle into my draft. We had a quick conversation and agreed to hammer out the section we were on at the moment. We both tucked in and gave 'er. It was one of those harmonious situations I look for everyday. I wish I had gotten a picture.

Oh yeah, he was wearing some sort of speedometer and clocked us at 37.5 km/h / 23.3 mph.

I was 12 when I first went to San Diego. It was on a family trip, which in my family meant a 14 day coastal tour of California Missions from SD to SF. Being 12 and in grade 6, I nor my sister were none to impressed. Much to my delight 3 bars have found homes in SD and will with any luck cycle by some of those Missions I remember.

Wood is good. Seriously, look at this. Barring the obvious (and IMO unequal) comparisons of carbon fiber to wood it is clear that wood is a serious substitute for metal/carbon. I especially like the part about wood fabrication being less toxic than carbon fiber. I decided a few years ago to do away with the urethanes, epoxies, ethyl alcohols, et. al. Now I use only Tung oils and turpentine (love that smell) and I think I am healthier for it. I suppose you would be too, riding an FB bar.

Sugar Maple Ironing Board c. 1920's

My faether bought this ironing board at an antique show last summer for me to "do something with". According to the dealer it was pulled out of a barn for an estate auction by his grandfather and is dated roughly from the 1920's. I will be working this piece for the next while and should be able to get 25 handlebars from it.

The Ironing Board bar series is half spoken for already, get at me soon before they are all gone.

Wooden Riser/Track Bars

I am producing track bars made using reclaimed hardwoods I have picked up/sought out along the way and also from the great people at Urban Tree Salvage in Toronto. The great thing about reclaimed timber is that it has been air-dried and aged naturally which gives it amazing stability over freshly cut, kiln-dried timber. I will try to accommodate different requests for wood species to the best of my abilities but well-aged timber of certain varieties may not always be readily available.

off the shelf bars will stick with a standard spec but if you're really in need of something specific we can get that done too.

Each piece is more or less one of a kind, being that no two pieces of wood are exactly alike and the reclaimed boards come from a variety of sources. Each bar is handmade and finished with pure natural Tung Oil (no chemical urethanes). These are a functional work of art, picture perfect to differentiate your bike from all the rest.
